APRIL 16, 2024— The Pal-Mac Varsity Wrestling team received special recognition Tuesday morning for their outstanding season.
The Wayne County Board of Supervisors honored the team with a proclamation during its monthly meeting. Team members traveled to the county courthouse in Lyons for the recognition.
Supervisors from both Macedon and Palmyra read the proclamation aloud as the team stood next to them at the front podium. The supervisors then awarded a framed copy of the proclamation to the team.
The Red Raiders completed a successful 2023-24 season, culminating in a Section V (Five) Class B1 and Section V Dual Meet Championship. Additionally, the team sent several wrestlers to Albany to compete in the New York State Championships.
Senior Braidon Woodward took home a title, becoming the first Pal-Mac wrestler to do so since Jace Schafer in the 2020-2021 season.
Head Coach Ed Schafer was also named Section V’s Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
“It was a good experience going through the whole season with the guys and now getting to celebrate all that work we put in,” Woodward said. “We get to celebrate something we accomplished together.”
Junior Jared Haers called the recognition a “unique experience” and reflected on the team’s two previous seasons, which both yielded sectional titles.
Haers was among those wrestlers who took home an individual sectional title and represented the school in the state championships.
“We put in a lot of work all year round, nonstop,” Haers said. “All the hard work really pays off when you get to experience cool things like this.”
Senior wrestler Cody Quick added that while the recognition was special, he enjoyed seeing fellow teammates improve as the season progressed. He said the team also strengthened its bond throughout the year.
Quick, like Haers, won an individual sectional title.
“It was a great four years for me, and I definitely got a lot better, and so will these younger guys,” Quick said.
