DEC.1, 2025— A Pal-Mac High School tradition made it big splash in its big return just before the Thanksgiving break.

"The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta" happened on Monday, Nov.24 in the High School Pool in front of a cheering crowd of students and teachers. The annual competition took a brief hiatus in 2024.

The regatta featured several hand-built cardboard boats from both Pal-Mac and nearby Red Jacket High School students as they competed to see whose boat was built to last. The boats underwent a series of races followed by a strength test featuring water polo balls.

The entire event was live streamed on the Pal-Mac YouTube page courtesy of Mr.Kevin Schlegel and his broadcasting students. The broadcast featured commentary from teacher Mr. Coleston Scheik, and senior Trey Porpora.

While the regatta is a notably fun event, it also serves as the culmination of several months-long project by Pal-
Mac Technology Teacher Marc Jennette's Engineering Design and Development (EDD) students.

The class designed their boats using a design software, and then decided on a specific theme From there, they used cardboard, masking tape, and
latex paint to construct their crafts. Students also logged their entire design process in a daily journal. 

Each boat had to support at least two people.

Among the selected Pal-Mac themes were "Evil Hippie Van," "USS Nemo," and "The Banana Boat."

The USS Nemo, which was piloted by Carson Lich and George Newsome, went on to win the competition.
