MAY 23, 2022— The Palmyra-Macedon Central School District, and its Dollars for Scholars (DFS) program has yet again seen a record fundraising year as it prepares to distribute a total of $193,350 in scholarships to the Class of 2022.
This number surpasses the previous record of $185,300, which was set last year.
The money raised was the direct result of the organization’s endowment annual phone-a-thon event, as well as private donations.
“The outstanding generosity of our citizens makes our scholarship program one of the most successful in New York State,” added Superintendent Bob Ike.
The phone-a-thon has raised over $15,419 (year to date) As part of the fundraising effort, roughly 100 high school students volunteered in March to call households in the Pal-Mac community. Funds raised helped the organization award ten $2,000 scholarships to deserving members of the Class of 2022.
$169,100 will be awarded across 190 DFS-specific scholarships, with $24,250 going towards 13 independent scholarships. With 69 total applicants, this year’s haul will award roughly $2450 per student. Beginning this year, $1,500 in scholarships will come from the generous $650,000 donation bequeathed to the program by beloved community member, Patricia Brockhuzen.
The award recipients will be announced during the annual Dollars for Scholars Awards ceremony on Thursday, June 2.
The Pal-Mac Dollars for Scholars chapter is part of Scholarship America's national network. The organization is composed of local volunteers to help students achieve their educational goals by raising scholarship funds, establishing endowments, providing assistance with college readiness and the financial aid process, and distributing scholarships each year. Since its founding in 1987, the Pal-Mac chapter has distributed more than $2 million in scholarships funds to over 2,000 deserving students.
