Welcome!

This year, your child has been selected for Literacy Lab, a reading intervention class.  Each of us have been paired with a grade level and will focus on the students in that grade level.  Not only do we provide instruction in our literacy labs, but we also co – teach various Social Studies and Reading classes within our grade levels.  This allows us to better meet the needs of your child and to ensure he/she is successful in all subject areas

Literacy Lab classes consist of small groups, with a lot of opportunity for differentiated and more individualized instruction.  Throughout the year we will focus on a variety of reading strategies, vocabulary, decoding, and comprehension development.  Over the course of the year, we will work to build ability, confidence and self – esteem in reading.

What is Literacy Lab?

Literacy Lab is a 37 minute class, in addition to the daily Reading and ELA classes.  It is designed to reinforce numerous reading strategies and strengthen the areas of weakness for each individual student.

Objective:

Each class begins with a focus activity followed by a variety of activities tailored to meet the needs of all of our students.  These activities include specific strategy instruction to develop both reading proficiency as well as other ELA based experiences.  The course curriculum is individualized and differentiated, and is designed to parallel the New York State Learning Standards for the middle level grades.

Assessment Practice:

Throughout the year, students will be assessed to monitor progress and continuously determine areas of need.  Many of these assessments will mirror the NYS test and will include multiple choice, short response, and extended response questions.

  Selection Criteria:

Your child has been selected for our reading classes based on a variety of formal and informal assessments.  Some of the tools used to determine eligibility were:

Ø       New York State English Language Arts Assessment

Ø        GRADE (Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation)

The Pal – Mac Way

This year the district has introduced the Pal – Mac Way, which is comprised of four main tenets.

v      Caring

v      Citizenship

v      Respect

v      Responsibility

As reading teachers, our goal is not only to help students become successful readers and learners, but to be successful members of our school and the community.  In order to achieve this success we encourage students to follow the Pal – Mac Way!
