Around the World

This year we will use the ABC’s to analyze communities around the world along with New York State.

 

 

 

How to analyze any culture around the world, from A to Z.

What is culture? It is everything in a society, from A to Z.
A is for Art, D is for Dress, L is for Language, R is for religion.
T is for Taboos – behaviors that are unacceptable.
Using the ABCs, you can analyze any culture in the world!
A great way to learn cultural similarities and differences. 

Art & Literature: What art forms and literature are typical of this culture?
Buildings: What building symbolizes this culture?
Communication: How does the average person get news and get around?
Dress: What clothing is typical of this culture?
Economy: What drives the economy - farms, factories or services?
Family: What does the typical family look like?
            What is the role and status of women?
            What is the role and status of children?
Geography: How does geography shape the culture? (An overview)
                  How does location shape the culture?
                  How do physical features shape the culture?
                  How does the climate shape the culture?
History: What historical events have shaped this culture?
Icon: What images cause an immediate, emotional response?
Jobs: How does the average person make a living?
Knowledge: How is knowledge passed from one generation to another?
Language: What do words and expressions tell you about this culture?

Movement/Migration: How is this culture connected to the rest of the world?
                                  How did the Europeans shape this culture?
National Pride: What people, places, things spark feelings of patriotism?
Organizations: What are the most important organizations (formal + informal)?
Population: What groups (age, race, ethnic groups) shape this culture?
Quality of Life: How to rate the average person’s health and happiness.
Religion: What are the traditional holidays and festivals?
Status: What groups have high and low status?
Taboos: What behaviors are considered to be totally unacceptable?
Urban or Rural: Is this a city culture or a country culture?
Vacation & Recreation: In this culture, how do people have fun?
Ways of Daily Life: What’s it like to live in this culture?
Yum! (Food): What does the typical family eat? What foods are unique?
Ztuff (Stuff): What stuff (cultural artifacts) is typical of this culture?

Example:

  • A is for Art. In China a traditional art form is silk painting.
  • B is for Buildings. In China, the Great Wall and the Forbidden City are structures that symbolize the culture.
  • C is for Communication. In China, wall posters in the town square are a common way of spreading opinions about political matters.
  • D is for Dress. In northern China, padded jackets are won in winter.
  • E is for Economy. Until recently, in China the communist government owned all the farms and factories.
  • F is for Family. In China, the government allows parents to have only one child.
