Your summer assignment:
1. Please read the enclosed the materials which detail (briefly) the foundation, history, and principles of both Hinduism and Buddhism. In order to grasp the concepts and reality of the novel, it is essential that you have a basic knowledge of Hinduism and Buddhism. 2. As you read the materials please highlight as you see fit, paying special attention to guiding principles, practices, and philosophies. 3. Write a reflection paper on your journey of self discovery thus far. What have you learned? How have you changed? Why have you changed, what has been the catalyst, the cause? 4. Before reading the novel, please preview the Siddhartha vocabulary list and Siddhartha glossary. 5. Read the novel. As you read the novel, please answer the questions for each chapter (typed please). 6. As you read the novel, please write a response to each chapter (typed please). A response details one of the following: a. insight into a character b. your reaction to a particular quote- what does it make you think of? Why? c. a connection to your life- how are you and the author similar? d. your reaction to a character or their actions e. what do you see? What literary devices present itself in this chapter? How is the plot developed?*** A response is NOT a summary of the chapter.***
Juniors, I am thrilled to be teaching this class next year and about the literature that we will explore together. I look forward to our year together. In order to be successful in this (or any) class diligence, responsibility, effort, and positive attitude are a must. Please come to the first day of class with this summer assignment completed. Failure to complete the summer assignment may result in student removal from the class.

College English: I. Read the College English Writing Packet II. Paradise of the Blind Your Summer Assignment 1. Please read Duong Thu Huong’s (the author’s) biographical information. 2. Please read and HIGHLIGHT the historical and cultural information regarding Communist Vietnam. 3. BEFORE you read the novel, write a first person narrative account of a South Vietnamese land owner’s experiences directly following the Vietnam War. Questions to consider: How did you lose your land? What happened to your land? Where were you sent? Your family? What was the social/political/economic climate at the time? 4. Read the novel. After each chapter, please write a quote response. A quote response includes a quote (that you found beautiful/disturbing/interesting) and your commentary. What does the quote mean in the context of the novel thus far? What literary elements/devices are found within? PLEASE DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE QUOTE OR THE PLOT. Seniors, I am excited about the addition of this piece to next year’s curriculum. Please have this summer assignment completed and ready to turn in on the first day of class. Failure to complete any or all of the summer assignment may result in student removal from the class. We will begin the discussion of this novel on September. 14th.
