Healthful Hints from the Middle School Nurse

Guidelines for keeping your child home due to illness:

  • A temperature of 100 degrees or higher
  • Children should be fever-free for one day, without the aid of a fever-reducing product before they return to school.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • A suspicious rash
  • A headache that continues for a day or more, or reoccurs.
  • A bad cough or cold symptoms
  • A sore throat, especially if exhibiting other symptoms such as nausea, rash, or fever
  • Redness of an eye, especially if accompanied with drainage or itching.

When your child is absent from school for illness or any other reason, parents or guardians must notify the Nurse's Office.  Please remember to send in a written note of explanation when your child returns to school(NY State law).

Medications

Any medications which must be given during school hours, including over the counter medications, MUST be in the original container, accompanied by written instructions from the doctor or primary care provider, and left in the Nurse's Office.

Please see link at the bottom of this page to print Over the counter medication form.

Immunizations

  • Students who are entering 6th grade or a comparable age-level special education school or program on or after September, and who are 11 years of age or older must receive an immunization containing tetanus toxoids, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap).
  • 10 year old students who are entering 6th grade will not be required to receive a Tdap vaccine upon entering, but will be required to receive the immunization once they turn 11 years old.
  • New York State Public Health Law Section 2164 requires students who will be enrolled in 6th grade, born on or after January 1, 1994, to be immunized against Varicella (commonly known as chickenpox).  If a student has had chickenpox, and its documented by their health care provider, they do not require the vaccine.  Proof of disease MUST be documented by the PCP.

Physical Exams

New York State Law requires all students in 7th grade to have a physical exam(PE) on file at school.

Student athletes also must have a yearly physical on file to participate in sports.  PE's are good for one calendar year.  It is most helpful for students to have their PE's over the summer break as they will be good for all seasons of sports throughtout the school year. Regardless of the time, please turn in all physicals to the health office as they are part of each student's permanent health record.

School physicals can be done at the Pal-Mac Middle School if requested.  Kathy Olschewske,FNP-C from Pal-Mac Medical Group will be available prior to each sport season and in August to complete needed physicals.  At this time, physicals are free to 7th graders.  All other students requesting a school physical will need to pay $30 at the time the PE is done.  Cash or checks made out to Palmyra-Macedon Central Schools are acceptable.  All physicals done at school are good for one calendar year.

Dental Certificates- All students in 7th grade should turn in a dental certificate after an annual cleaning exam to the Health office.  Click here for dental certificate

Screenings

Vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings are done in the Health office.  If your child is experiencing trouble in any of these areas, contact the nurse to discuss further evaluation.  If your student is in need of eye glasses, and assistance is needed, please contact me at the health office for further information.

BMI

As part of a required school health examination, a student is weighed and his/her height is measured.  These numbers are used to figure out the student's body mass index or "BMI".  The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student's weight is in a healthy range or is too high or too low.  Recent changes to the New York State Education Law required that BMI and weight status group be included as part of the student's school health examination.  A sample of school districts will be selected to take part in a survey by the New York State Department of Health.  If our school is selected to be part of the survey, we will be reporting to NYS Department of Health information about students' weight status groups.  Only summary information is sent.  No names and no information about individual students are sent. However, you may choose to have your child's information excluded from this survey report.  The information sent to the NYSDOH will help health officials develop programs that make it easier for children to be healthier.  If you do not wish to have your child's weight status group information included as part of the Health Department's survey, please print and sign a note asking for your student's information not to be included on the survey.
